Rio Port District - Architecture Competition

A proposal to integrate the "hidden city" to the se. A permanent legacy

This architecture competition demonstrated the ARENA technical team flexibility also to propose interesting architecture solutions for other urban spaces. As part of the RIO 2016 Olympic games city transformation, Rio Municipality promoted a invitation competition to some architecture studios, aiming for a complete renovation of the port area, a dream for years.

The ARENA project for a new neighborhood in the port region of Rio de Janeiro proposes the opportunity to think about the planning and restructuring of the city at three levels: urban, regional and local. In three different giant concrete slabs with big pubic plazas, the idea is create a complete recycling of the urban landscape.

The plazas integration is done with gardens, multi-sports courts next to areas shaded by columns on the top, as well as services converted from Olympic program spaces into legacy mode. The program is also consisted with apartments on legacy and event mode (10,600 rooms), a multifunctional commercial building, one aparthotel, 3 and 5 star hotels and aconvention center; leveraging what would be a dynamic neighborhood in the city.
